Social Value – Our responsibility

Here at MW Benney Ltd we do our upmost to run our operations in line with the National TOMS framework, a social value measurement standard and a solution to the Social Value Act of 2012, at all times. We believe it is our responsibility as a long standing, local SME to the Torbay and South Devon area to support our local community in every way we can, environmentally, economically and socially.

“In its most general sense, the creation of social value is the conscious effort on the part of a business or organisation to deliver outcomes that benefit local communities and/ or society – whether that be through social, economic or environmental means.”

Fighting Climate Change:

  • Wherever possible, we source local materials and use local demolition systems with robust recycling policies.
  • We use an App to communicate with our employees, this includes instructions, qualification certificates, time sheets which significantly reduces our paper usage and travel.
  • Wherever possible we meet virtually to reduce travel.
  • We employ local people and always prioritise local subcontractors.
  • We transport share wherever possible and never travel unnecessarily.
  • We recycle all recyclable materials wherever and whenever possible.  We also use a local skip company that has their own recycling facilities.

Post Pandemic Recovery:

  • We employ local people on full time permanent contracts.
  • We help to raise aspirations by supporting local apprenticeship programs from our local provider South Devon College.
  • We price work competitively but remain very loyal to our local subcontractors

Tackling Economy Equality:

  • Stakeholder member of BuildTorbay, a non-profit organisation that helps young people and career changers to achieve the right skills for the modern construction sector and present skills and training opportunities to Torbay residents.
  • We believe in employing locally: all of our full and part time roles are local; the vast majority have TQ 1-5 postcodes.
  • We do our upmost to use local subcontractors. From website design and accountants to carpenters and plasterers.
  • We make sure our staff are trained to the highest standards to ensure they are personally skilled which then contributes to a locally competitive job market.
  • We offer site and office tours to local schools and colleges to promote construction opportunities and careers and to help young people pursue their career in the local area.

Improving local infrastructure:

  • By collaborating with our clients at the very early stages of a build, right through to our post build maintenance contracts, we make sure the need and values of the local people are of the utmost importance.

Equal opportunities:

  • We use a rigorous equal opportunities policy that ensures potential applicants are considered equally irrespective of race, gender or age.

Well being:

  • We maintain robust health and safety training and standards.
  • Site inductions are carried out on all sites to ensure safety and wellbeing.
  • Monthly Toll Box Talks provided by our Health and Safety Advisors, on all aspects of construction including mental health, stress and work life balance. And completed monthly.
  • We maintain out of hours support. We ensure our employees can contact the management team outside of working hours 7 days a week., 52 weeks a year.
